UK SIM Cards that are registered in UK have the UK phone number on them irrespective of the country where you are traveling.  The UK code of 44 is recorded on all the SIM Cards used there. However these days there have been growing instances of stealing of SIM Cards and handsets.  In fact the SIM Card gets automatically stolen when you lose your handset.  You may be interested to know the course of action that is opened to you in such cases.

Some necessary steps when your SIM Card is stolen –

The very first step that you should take is to contact your provider and inform them about the stolen SIM Card so that they can block the SIM.  The provider after verification of your authenticity will immediately bar the SIM Card.  Normally major providers have their own special phone numbers for lodging such complaints regarding the stolen SIM Card.  In United Kingdom they ordinarily use two sets of numbers.  One is for inland complaint while the other is for overseas complaints.

In addition you should also lodge a complaint with the law enforcement agencies of the area.  Remember, you will be responsible for any untoward or illegal communication or uses made with the mobile phone with your SIM Card and even if you are not in possession of the same you cannot escape your legal liabilities.  Once you lodge the complaints and your provider blocks the card such contingencies will not arise.

The problem of unwelcome messages and calls

Very often you will be having a lot of messages displayed on your mobile through your SIM Card and sometime you will also get unwarranted calls.  They are not only disturbing and irritating but also may cost you quite dearly as each of these calls are meant to realize some price from you in terms of the call costs. In addition such unwelcome messages may clog your text message box causing important messages being blocked without receipt.

The steps that you should take is deleting all such unwelcome messages instantly using the user manual or guide provided to you.  In addition you must inform the provider and the parent companies about such unwelcome calls and messages and they will arrange such messages to be blocked from reaching your SIM Card in the handset.  For processes and queries you may call the Customer Care Services.

GPRS Services in GSM networks

There are however some GSM networks in which supplementary services may not be available.  Such supplementary services may include FAX and text messages.  Moreover your GSM phone has to be of the correct frequency for use in the countries other than where it was bought.  Majority of GSM networks contain service called GPRS that allows convenient data transfer at the speed of 20-50 kilobits per second. These are similar to the dial-up analog phone line. It is also not very costly.  Except a few countries like Austria, Poland and Czech Republics, it follows the uniform rate of $3.91 throughout the world. GSM is usually slower as well as expensive in comparison to GPRS.  However in places where no GPRS services are available, GSM is the only option you have.
